Creating The Frontier - A Look Behind The Scenes

This is probably as close to a tutorial as I'll ever come to sharing. These are the six steps that go into making a shot of The Frontier.

The first two steps are "storyboard" steps. I get a feel for where I want the subject to move, what I want it to do, and how it interacts with the environment. In a rotation shot like this one, this step is crucial to getting the look of the subject just right. If it's a simple shot, or I already have a good idea of exactly what I want, I'll often skip these steps.

The next two steps are line-art. I go frame by frame over the storyboard shots and replace them with the line-art subjects. This is also where I try and add stock footage that will go where I need it: anything to lessen the work load a bit.

The final steps are coloring and shading, just pulling everything together.
